TOGETHER THROUGH TRAUMA AT PHILADELPHIA REC CENTERS
In fall 2025, TTT wrapped up an incredible pilot with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. With funding from PCCD in 2023, CFAR was able to embed Together Through Trauma (TTT) programming into 6 rec centers in North and West Philadelphia in high violence zip codes. The goal of this pilot was to bring the programming directly to those most impacted by gun violence in a welcoming space, allowing the TTT team to build trust and grow education in that community. The programming was a success, but engagement was a challenge since the team was limited to the targeted rec centers. In order to reach a larger audience, TTT shifted to a model of programming by partner request. This means TTT will still partner with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, but will be able to work with all of the rec centers in high violence neighborhoods, as well as more partner organizations.
Services and programming in the PPR embedded programming included:
-Evidence-based trauma counseling by a highly trained trauma therapist for to those directly impacted by gun violence in person or through telehealth, making appropriate referrals as needed.
-Weekly open access hours led by a trauma therapist at each of the 6 rec centers.
-Community workshops for children, adults, teens and families led by a trauma therapist at each of the 6 rec centers.
-Staff trainings/workshops for recreation staff and/or community partner staff working within the communities surrounding the rec centers.
-Emotional Education Workshops at parks and rec summer camps over 2 summers at 12 rec centers
-Outreach to the communities surrounding the targeted rec centers through activities like community event tabling, flyer distribution, and family engagement during workshops
The 6 rec centers were chosen based on need for this type of programming and services, and several had to be adjusted due to logistical issues like construction:
-Feltonville Rec Center, 221 E Wyoming Ave., Philadelphia, PA, 19120
-Lonnie Young Rec Center, 100 E Chelten Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19138 (was previously Mallory Rec Center but logistics required change)
-Tustin Rec Center, 5901-29 W. Columbia Ave., Philadelphia, PA, 19151
-C.B. Moore Rec Center, 2551 N 22nd St., Philadelphia, PA, 19132 (due to construction this programming was moved to Gathers Rec Center)
-Mander Playground, 2140 N. 33rd St., Philadelphia, PA, 19121
-8th and Diamond Playground, 800 Diamond St., Philadelphia, PA, 19122
