  Its easy to forget them...

After all, you don't see them all the time, You may  not know who they are. And when you do see them, they aren't asking you for help. They're smiling, saying Hello as if everything is just fine, as if their lives aren't heavy with shame. As if every day isn't a struggle.

Its easy to forget that there are more then 150,000 one-parent families quietly struggling in Philadelphia. Struggling to nurture their children as best they can when they're not working.

And the silent struggle...battling feelings of self-doubt, betrayal. abandonment , and isolation. The sense that there's nowhere to go. No one to turn to for help.

But for the past ten years, the Center for Families And Relationships has been there to help. It's a safe place to go, where trained and certified therapist will listen - and understand. Its a place where all families, but especially one-parent families, can come to and know that its okay to talk about their feelings. That's its okay to have those feelings. And that it's possible to heal.

With so many parents making the transition from welfare to work in Philadelphia, the Center Has become the perfect place for them to meet that challenge by developing the self-confidence needed to up-grade their job skills and increase their income.

Whether children are expressing themselves through the Center's Art Therapy Program or a parent is creating a trusting bond with a therapist, everyone who comes in contact with the Center for Families And Relationships learns that they are important and that someone cares.

For all families and their children, especially low income single parents, the Center is a wonderful way to get back on track. A supportive environment for people of all ages. A safe place to grow.

The Center for Families And Relationships, Inc., still has a lot of growing to do, too. We hope to expand our existing services and create new ones, including other satellite locations, an arts and crafts shop, and procuring a large building to house the Center's outreach programs.

More then 200 parents in the Northeast have taken advantage of the Center's parenting education programs. Imagine how many families could begin healing in the Philadelphia area if our partnership were able to grow. The center tends to those sapling dreams with the same care and determination that we exercise with our clients" with hope, compassion, and empathy. And the understanding that - no matter how grueling the fund-raising battle might be - new found dignity is truly priceless.

"(The Center) has been most helpful in keeping me focused on the important stuff...
I don't know what we would do without you."
Ed, father of one
