About Our Organization...

The Center For Families and Relationships is a non-profit counseling center providing high quality therapeutic services for the working poor, particularly single parent families. We offer therapy for singles, couples, families and children as well as Anger Management Groups, Parenting classes and Art Therapy for Children.

Although our clients come from throughout Philadelphia, Bucks and Montgomery counties, CFAR primarily servers the Lower Northeast, an area that is diverse with respect to ethnicity, cultures and religion. Blacks, Whites, Latino and Orientals are all represented. We are particularly committed to single parent families through our Partners in Parenting Program. These single parent families are usually headed by the mother who works in a low paying job that does not provide health insurance. Often times, moms and the children live with grandparents and this three-generation living situation can be particularly stressful. Few families in Lower Northeast neighborhoods can afford quality childcare. It is this underserved population to whom CFAR is committed.

Mary C Volk, a former school teacher, founded CFAR in February 1994. Ms. Volk felt compelled to address the burgeoning need of the working poor families and especially single parent families in her community.

CFAR's goal is to reduce these risks through counseling, support and educational outreach. We believe that as Partner in Parenting children at risk, we increase the possibly that children (and their families) will get what they need to become healthy and productive members of their families and of society.

Lessons From Geese

As each goose flaps it's wings, it creates "uplift" for the bird following.

By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% more flying range then if each bird flew alone.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the "lifting power" of the bird immediately in front.

When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies at the point position taking the leadership.

The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and stay with the injured goose until it is either able to fly again or dies. Then they launch out on their own with another formation to catch up with the flock.

CONSIDER A FLOCK OF GEESE IN FORMATION.

CONSIDER WHAT THEY MIGHT TEACH A HUMAN FAMILY
